subject: What A Yearbook Represents To People [print this page] Nearly every school student since the early 1900's has had at least one picture in a yearbook, or often called an annual. What goes into the creation of such a book? It is never just a one person project for an organization to create an annual.
Students are still writing the required essay about why they want to be on the yearbook staff. These volunteers are in charge of collecting, sorting, verifying information and the layout of the book.
Schools and churches used to have active groups within their organization to work on finding the best and most cost effective way to produce a hard covered yearbook. As a cost cutting procedure, organizations are choosing print-on-demand, or Internet downloads. Downloads and e-books don't offer the same anticipation of delivery. Students used to line up for their books, anxious for friends to autograph them, but not so much with the newest digital technology.
The Internet has many links to sites that to find a yearbook to give you creative ideas. As a novelty item, there are paperback books with tidbits written about the year you were born. They tell a story in a particular layout of interesting or funny tidbits of world history, recipes and certain slang phrases of the day, such as "that's groovy." You can create your own to give as gifts to friends or family members.
Once you decide to make a yearbook, you will then need to decide about how, or if, it will be distributed. You can have it printed by a traditional book printer, or you can choose to keep it in a totally digital downloadable format.
Many countries besides the U.S.A., also share the yearbook tradition for schools and organizations. Australia, Canada, India and South Africa are some of the other countries. Many military service organizations produce books for the soldiers stationed around the world.
A yearbook is divided into sections to share real life experiences with their readers. Most are produced to represent the various school organizations, activities, staff, faculty and portraits of each student as part of their class. Traditionally, there is always a section to cover the sports and academic activities, such as football or the honor society winners. You may find photos of the different clubs, such as the drama or music club.
Different people feel different things regarding a yearbook. To some people they are a waste of time, but to most people they are a worthwhile reminder of the past. It will be interesting in the next 20 years to see if there is still a sentiment for the past. The digital yearbook may take away some of the tactile connection to the past that a hard cover book gives the reader. There soon may be a phone application for that instead of having a book to sign for your friend.
