subject: Publication Of A Yearbook [print this page]

A yearbook is a record of events that have occurred over a period of time. Yearbooks are most commonly associated with educational institutions, such as elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. People like getting yearbooks because it is a documented text that allows them to reflect on their experiences and remember their classmates.

The book contains pictures, descriptions, and articles about people and events that were a part of the school during the past year. The book highlights particular academic, athletic and social events. Creating a yearbook is a process that occurs throughout a significant portion of the school year. Usually, a set number of students and faculty members form a yearbook committee or staff. The staff makes sure the book is produced and published by a set date.

The committee compiles all of the content and pictures that will be included in the book. They are also responsible for choosing a layout and design for the book cover and its various sections. The committee usually starts working on the book early on during the academic year. Each committee member is assigned a specific task that will help in the creation of the book.

Often, student writers and photographers cover academic and athletic events throughout the year so that they will be included in the book. The most interesting and important stories are chosen to be a part of the book. At some point during the school year, all of the students have their pictures taken by a professional photographer. Students have their class picture taken and are involved in photo sessions for different clubs and extracurricular activities they participate in. Pictures of the faculty members and their job descriptions are also provided in the book.

The committee usually needs financial help in order to publish the book. Members of the yearbook staff look for people who are willing to provide a financial contribution. Many local businesses often provide funding in exchange for advertising space within the book. By listing their business information in the widely distributed book, it can help improve business and inform more people of their services. The amount of money each business pays for advertising depends on how large they want their ads to be in the book.

Editors oversee the entire committee to ensure they fulfill their responsibilities. The editors want to make sure all deadlines are met in order to get the book completed and published on time. It is important that all of the information included in the book is cohesive and properly organized. Editors must approve the overall design of the book and all of the content. The editor position requires the ability to handle a lot of responsibility as well as strong leadership and organization skills.

Working closely and cooperatively with the yearbook publisher is essential. The publisher may require portions of the book be submitted throughout the academic year. Gradually completing the book throughout the year makes it easier to prevent major mishaps from occurring at the end of the process. One or several editors tend to be in direct contact with a representative of the publishing company until the entire project is completed.

Distribution of the yearbook occurs at the end of the academic year. Once people receive copies of the book, they may choose to have their friends and certain faculty members write a brief note and include their signature in the book. Publication of hard copy yearbooks is still very common but digital yearbooks are becoming more popular. Since a digital book can be cheaper to produce, it may include more content and pictures than a traditional book.
