If you are reading this article then I am assuming that you are already aware of the Project Management Professional (PMP) Exam and its benefit. In this article I will guide you through the process of becoming a PMP.

Eligibility: First step is to check whether you are eligible to apply for this exam of not. Eligibility conditions to apply for the PMP exam are fixed and you have to fulfill them in order to apply for the exam. If you want to become a PMP then you must be either a diploma or a degree holder. Depending upon the degree you hold you must have certain hours of work experience in leading the project. Last condition is to have a 35 contact hours of training program for formal Project Management Education. Once you satisfy all these conditions, you can apply for the PMP Certification Exam.

Become a PMI Member: It is your decision whether you want to join the PMI or not; however, I highly recommend you to join the PMI. It will give you numerous benefits. Though, this is an option step but I consider this as second step.

Earn Contact Hours: This is the third step. You have to attend a training program to earn 35 contact hours for Project Management Education. This is mandatory for you to earn it. You can earn it in many ways but I suggest you to get it through any Registered Education Provider (REP) by the PMI.

Apply for the Exam: This is the Fourth step for your journey towards becoming a PMP. In this step you have apply for the PMP Certification Exam. You can apply for the exam in two modes. First is online mode and second is offline mode. Online is quick and easy, and offline takes some time to complete the process. In offline you have to take printout of the form and send it to PMI to review. Choice is yours. Anyway, apply for the exam and submit the application. PMI may take one week to review and approve your application. If all of your information is correct and acceptable to PMI, they will send you the confirmation mail asking to submit the payment to schedule the exam. If you made some mistake in your application, or PMI feel something wrong then they may ask you for the clarification.

Make the Payment: Once you get the confirmation from the PMI your next step will be the payment for the PMP exam. Make the payment. Once you make the make the payment two things may happen. First, you will get the confirmation code from PMI to approach prometric to schedule the exam, and second you are selected for an audit. In first case, you can go to prometric site and schedule the exam, and if you are selected for an audit, continue reading.

PMP Audit: Don't worry, if you're selected for an audit. PMI will ask you provide the copies of your education certificates, experience certificates and for 35 contact hours etc. send it to them; they will take one week to review and approve your application. Once application is approved PMI will send you the code to schedule the PMP exam.

Schedule the Exam: Go to Prometric website and schedule the exam. Don't take date for more than two or three months. Three months is more than sufficient to prepare for the exam.

Take the exam: Go to Prometric Center on you schedule date and give the exam.
