subject: My Favourite Pastime - Fishing [print this page] Fishing has always been a favourite pastime of mine and something I have enjoyed from a very early age. My first memories of fishing were alongside by father at the local river. The equipment we had wasn't great but sufficed and more often than not we would end the day with a pretty good catch.
As I grew older we visited local lakes and ponds and begun fishing for different type of fish including Carp and Tench. Local tackle shops would point us in the right direction of good lakes to fish and also provide help and advice on the best swims to use and what baits work best in particular venues.
In my teens is when I got really serious about the sport and decided on joining a local fishing club so I could participate in matches around the country. We would often travel for hours to get to particular venues around the country and competing against other clubs would bring a little excitement into the game. It was also a great way in which to learn new tricks and meet new friends at the same time. A couple of trips to France are in the pipeline for next year so that's something to look forward to!
My fishing tackle box has obviously grown quite a bit since my younger days! Old basic rods have now been upgraded to top of the range rods with bait alarms. I have even invested in a Bivvy for my overnight fishing trips and a range of other fishing accessories including bait boats and keep nets.
I buy a lot of my fishing tackle online as prices tend to be a little cheaper and items normally get delivered within a few days so this suits me fine. I managed to buy a bait boat online for nearly a third cheaper so it is well worth looking online first! Having said that I do use the local tackle shops too, especially when a little bit of 'inside info' is needed for a new venue!
Now I have my own family I am hoping my kids will get into the sport of fishing. My son has already been with me a few times and although a little too young to sit there patiently for hours he does some pretty interested and hopefully, alongside his sister, many a Sunday afternoon will be enjoyed sitting by our local lake.
