subject: What To Look For In Used Compressors [print this page]

Many people buy a used air compressor for home use, whether it is to power their home improvement tools, for spraying paint or for another use. Used compressors can save you a lot of money but you need to make sure that you are not only getting a good deal, but getting a safe compressor too.

When you are looking to buy a used compressor, you need to check the hoses very carefully indeed. If the hoses haven't been stored correctly and have been left in direct sunlight or near a source of heat then they could be perished. If they are perished then they are potentially dangerous and will need replacing. If you are willing to pay for the cost of replacing the hoses and the compressor is still a good deal then it may be worth buying. Be aware that buying the proper hoses can be expensive and may require sending to the manufacturer for parts.

Check the air compressor works before you buy it. Run it for five or ten minutes and check all the seals, valves and fittings. Make sure there are no air leaks and make sure that everything works as it should. Check that the motor isn't overheating and that the compressor is producing the amount of output you would expect. Sometimes people sell their compressors when the pressure from the nozzle starts to drop. This could be due to a blockage or a more serious problem.

Also check the power cable for the compressor for damage and wear. Make sure that it isn't frayed or damaged in any way. This could be dangerous, putting you in risk of an electric shock, and it could damage the air compressor. A faulty or damaged power cable can be very difficult to replace as many air compressors have sealed power units, meaning you can't get in to it easily to service it or replace parts.

Often when people are selling used compressors they sell some of the odds and ends that came with it. Does the one you are looking at come with ear protectors or safety goggles or a facemask? If it doesn't then you have to factor the cost of buying these into the cost of the used air compressor. It may be that after factoring in this cost, the deal on the used compressor isn't as good as you originally thought. If it does come with these items, what sort of condition are they in? If they are in a poor condition you may have to replace them anyway.

Buying a used air compressor is a great way to save some money on one of these useful devices. However, make sure you check it over and ensure you are getting a good and safe deal.
