In the US, California, Washington, New York and Oregon are the areas where you will find red wine grapes being grown. In Europe, red wine grapes are mostly grown in French regions such as Bordeaux, Beaujolais, Bourgognes, Rhone and Loire. You can also find red wine grapes being grown in Australia, Argentina, Italy, Chile, Spain and South Africa. Most red wine grapes produce wine that is more complex as compared to grapes used for white wine. The reason for this is because the red wine grapes will remain on the grapevine for a much longer time because they require a longer season to grow in the warmer climates. Another reason why these grapes produce are more complex wine is because the skin of a red wine grape will stay in contact with its juice, and this is what gives red wine the flavor, color and tannin that is has.

The most common grapes used for red wine types include the following. The first one is called Barbera, and it is grown in the Piedmont region of Italy. The Barbera grape is acidic, and it has a full body with light tannins. This grape is mostly used to blend wine. The second type of red grape is called Brunello, and this is a variant of Sangiovese grapes. This is a noteworthy type of grape because it is the only type of grape that is permitted to be used in Brunello di Montalcino, which is a rare and expensive red wine that is bold and fruity. Another type of red grape is known as Dolcetto, and it is cultivated almost exclusively in Italy's Piedmont region. This grape produces red wine types that are fruity and ones having flavors and aromas of almonds and licorice.

Malbec is a type of grape that is mostly grown in Argentina, and it thrives there because of the hot and dry summers. It was once an important grape grown in the Bordeaux region of France, but its popularity is on the wane. The acidity of this type of grape can vary, and you will find this wine types being blended with the other varieties of grapes grown in Bordeaux. Merlot is a grape type that has grown in popularity as a result of the French Paradox, and it has soft, mellow and light tannin that appeals to most people.
