subject: Microsoft Is Expected To Make Remote Desktop Improvements In Windows Server 2012 [print this page]

It has been recently announced that Microsoft will be making improvements in the hosting capabilities of the forthcoming Windows Server 2012. These changes are aimed at augmenting its hosting features due to which users will be able access it remotely from a variety of client devices.

Windows Server 2012 is the latest of its type offered by Microsoft and presently is in the beta testing phase. The IT giant is planning to launch it finally with many improvements done on its Remote Desktop Services (RDS) feature. This will be very useful in further improving RDS performance over WANs.

Microsoft has revealed via a blog post that the RDS component of this server has been improved so that the setup of session and virtual machine infrastructures apart from its administration could be simplified.

The WAN performance improvement in Windows Server 2012 hovers around RemoteFX technology that was first introduced by Microsoft in Windows Server 2008. This was aimed to improve the quality of graphics as well as videos and animation on client devices. However, in Windows Server 2012 RemoteFX ceases to use a single codec for all graphics rather it applies specialized codecs for images, text and multimedia.

This technology has been reincarnated with enhanced ability to produce graphics that can bring rich experience in low-bandwidth or busy networks. It also contains a new codec that diminishes bandwidth used by around 90 percent for media content.

Some other improvements in the Windows Server 2012 include a user-friendly process with which users can find remote workspaces on Windows Server 2012. They can find workstations by just using their e-mail IDs, instead of entering a long and difficult to remember URL. Apart from IE, users can use this Remote Desktop Web Access feature with other browsers including Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

Furthermore, the Windows server 2012 features IT management simplification. It is going to accommodate a single RDS management interface that will enable the administrators to perform a full RDS deployment. Moreover, administrator will also be able to configure the options and manage all the components and servers. According to Microsoft, the RDS management unit will be an important part of the products Server Manager Component.

Another important improvement in the Windows Server 2012 is the infrastructure simplification and cost diminution of deployments. RDS, the remote desktop services in Windows Server 2012 will now have the ability to consolidate on a single virtual entity with multiple virtual machines. This will allow IT departments to provide single desktop to multiple users that does away with the requirement to maintain operating system for each of the users.

Last but not the least, Windows Server 2012 will also feature a setup wizard that will help the user to simplify and automate the process engaging RDS deployments. Thus the new product is much advanced and improved than its predecessor and accompanies many new and useful features.
