subject: Led Camping Lanterns Vs. Propane Camping Lanterns: A Comparison Of The Two [print this page]

In 1885, the basis of propane lantern technology, the durable thorium mantle, was invented by Austrian chemist Auer von Welsbach. Since the further development of the technology, the propane camping lantern has been a traditional light source for camping. The propane camping lantern has now become an even more powerful source of light, providing the same as a 300-watt light bulb.

On the other hand, the development of LED lighting technology has aided in LED lanterns becoming a popular alternative to propane models. Modern day LED camping lanterns offer more benefits that the propane counterparts. Here is a look at the comparison of the two.

Maintenance. An LED camping lantern doesn't really require any maintenance, save changing the batteries every now and then, but propane lanterns require the replacing of mantles, regulator switches or lenses.

Energy source. On cold evenings, propane can also serve as a mini source of heat, but the fuel used is still a fossil fuel. Battery-powered LED lanterns do not require fossil fuels and they are extremely energy efficient which helps extend battery life.

Safety. Propane camping lanterns cannot be brought in the tent as they are a fire hazard, but LED lanterns can as they do not require matches and emit no heat at all. Users must be careful about placing items too close to their propane lantern as things can melt or catch on fire, but LED camping lanterns do not pose that risk. Also, propane lanterns have the potential of emitting breathable carbon dioxide, which is especially dangerous for children, while LED counterparts do not.

Brightness. Propane emits brighter and more light than the LED versions and one has more control over the level of light being provided. LED models sometimes have a dimming option, but there are only one or two different options.

Cost. An LED camping lantern can run for 84 hours or longer on just a single set of batteries, while a propane lantern can last around 14 hours on a tank of fuel. The LED lantern ends up being the more cost efficient option over time.

Emergency use. An LED camping lantern is the best option when it comes to emergencies. All you need to do is turn on the power switch for instant light, as compared to the propane counterpart where you need to hook up a fuel tank or light a match first. LED lanterns are also light and can be easily packed into an emergency kit, and the batteries take up less space than extra fuel tanks. There are even LED lights that have a red-light option specifically for emergencies.

Sound. Some people prefer silent illumination, and that's what an LED lantern provides, while propane is more desirable to those who enjoy the hissing sounds for the nostalgia factor.

Durability. Propane lanterns, especially those made of glass, tend to be more fragile than LED camping lanterns.

So, there are pros and cons to both of these options, but if you are only looking for sheer brightness, then propane lanterns are the way to go. If you are more interested in convenience, safety, and cost, then an LED camping lantern is your best bet, especially as it provides such great benefits.
