subject: Discovering Lake Kariba [print this page]

On the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe lies Lake Kariba or the Kariba dam, the world"s largest man-made dam. This feat of engineering was first filled with water in 1963 and since then it has provided the Kariba Gorge and Zambezi river with a steady supply of water, having a catchment area of 663 000 square kilometres.

Before Lake Kariba was constructed the vegetation in the area was burnt to make place for this massive body of water. As a result, the soil along the Kariba"s banks is highly fertile and the dam is home to a large variety of plant and animal life. Visitors to Kariba will spend many hours fishing, exploring the river banks and taking in the beautiful sunsets and glorious summer days that have given Lake Kariba its nickname, The Zambian Riviera.

Visitors planning a trip to Lake Kariba may be wondering how to get there. From Lusaka, Zambia, a scenic 2.5 hour drive is all that"s needed to arrive at Siavonga where your Kariba experience will begin. Once you arrive at the Lake a variety of accommodation and activity options will await you, with something to suit every family, tour group and budget.

For sports fishing enthusiasts Lake Kariba is a dream come true. With the variety of fish species which are plentiful in the lake"s vast waters, the chances of catching a coveted tiger fish or bream are good for the skilful fisherman.

Families can relax at one of the lodges or self-catering chalets on the banks of the lake, or take a houseboat trip that combines sightseeing, comfort and the opportunity to unwind in magnificent surroundings. Kariba is famous for its houseboats. These fully equipped and catered boats cruise the lake, mooring in secluded bays in game rich areas. Small tender boats go out at dawn and dusk for game cruises and fishing. The luxury lodges and camps along the southern shoreline offer the total safari experience with game drives, boat cruises, game walks and fishing.

Sightseeing activities around Lake Kariba include a trip to the dam wall to witness the sheer size and depth of the lake. The fascinating story of the dam"s construction will enthral technical minded visitors, while those who prefer to take in the splendour of the lake will be enthralled by a walk over the lake bridge.
