The common behind macular hole in your eye is due to vitreous shrinking or separation. As Vitreous is attached to retina with tiny strands of cell therefore, it can pull on the retina as it shrinks. Number of time this shrinking can tear off a small peace of the retina causing a hole in your eye. According to studies usually fluid can seep into a macular hole, causing blurred and distorted vision. Diabetic eye disease, high myopia, macular pucker, detached retina or eye injury can also cause macular hole problem.
These days Vitrectomy is common treatment which is used for treating macular hole problem. In this treatment surgery is done by retina specialist for removing the vitreous gel to stop it from pulling on the retina after that surgeon insert a mixture of air and gas into the space which usually get occupied due to vitreous. Therefore bubble of air and gas puts pressure on the edges of the macular hole, allowing it to heal. Therefore when bubble is doing its job its recommended that patient must lie down with the face down so that bubble stays at accurate place in ones eye. Sometime for as long as two or three weeks though it can be seemed very boring but it has to be done for getting proper treatment for getting rid of this problem.
On the other hand shrinkage of the vitreous body number of time can cause traction on the peripheral retina in areas where the vitreous body is struck therefore this traction can cause tear in the retina. On the other hand it can happen due to aging and it can occur in both the retina and the vitreous body.
