Reasons for Signing Up

People volunteer because they want to donate their time to a worthy cause, often volunteering in areas that impassion them and arouse empathy, from conservation to community building.

Volunteering is a unique opportunity to experience the world beyond the tourist bubble. Gap year volunteer placements tend to be longer than the average holiday, stretching from several weeks to several months. This allows a behind-the-scenes view of a culture from the inside rather than as an outsider; the longer one stays, the more a 'part' of the culture one will become. You may even get the chance to stay with locals and experience their traditional lifestyle.

As such, volunteer work is the ultimate learning experience. It is a revelation emphasising how a large part of the world exists in extreme poverty and without the opportunities available to those in the west. Many volunteers, aware of this disparity, see dedicating their time as a way of 'balancing the scales.' Emotionally touched by what they witness, they become resolute about making a difference to the lives of others.

This time spent often plays a strong part in the personal growth of the volunteer; many come away from the experience feeling a better person, more compassionate, selfless and aware of the real world. It also develops skills that strengthen CVs and help with future employment prospects, allowing volunteers to end the day with a sense of accomplishment.

The Ultimate Aim

Helping others is the ultimate goal to come from volunteering work. The impact of volunteering on the community is immense; it provides services, aid and assistance that otherwise the community would not have.

In today's world, it is easy to use gap year volunteering experiences as a way of showing one's selfless nature. However, it is important not to lose track of what volunteering is truly about.

Essentially, volunteering is not meant to be about 'you' as the individual. One is not there on a personal mission but rather to uphold the ideas of the mission and to aid the community at hand in any way possible. It may not be glamorous, but it is life-changing. Put into perspective, a child who is able to read or a village that has clean drinking water far outweighs luxury accommodation and material possessions.

It is important, therefore, to understand the goals, aims and mission of the volunteer group or charity; this allows any volunteer to slot into place and pace quickly and make the most of their time and energy making a difference to those less fortunate.

By approaching the job with this mindset and a positive attitude on hand, a volunteer experience will be worthwhile to everyone involved!

Whatever the work they undertake, volunteers make a real difference to the world and its needful communities. By giving out of one's own selflessness, lives can be infinitely bettered and nothing can put a value on the contribution that volunteering makes to society.
