subject: Microsoft Sidewinder X6 Keyboard Review [print this page] The Microsoft Sidewinder X6 gaming keyboard, although not top of the range this unit has some very nice features that buyers will find pleasing and will no doubt improve their playing ability over conventional keyboards.
There is no fancy display screen on this model which obviously helps keep the price down but it compensates for that in other ways.
Arguably one of the best features of this device the detachable gaming button array that can be positioned on either side of the main keyboard, this will be a great asset to left handed users or others than prefer the gaming array to be on the opposite side to normal. The key presses are nice and positive and the action will be liked by a great many people.
The X6 has a possible 30 programmable keys with three options per key giving a total of 90 options with a game profile, using the software game profile switching which is automatic. The keys have backlighting but on this keyboard but only the intensity can be adjusted, the gaming keys are different in color to the main keys amber and red respectively in this model. The X6 comes with a mode switch that allows switching between normal or a choice of two gaming modes.
A unique feature Microsoft have developed for the X6 is there cruise control button this allows for continuous action without having to keep keys depressed although this option will not operate with the macro program keys, but it is nevertheless a nice touch. The X6 has multifunction media keys.
This keyboard is only designed to work with Windows operating systems there is no support for Mac and software installation will be required.
Overall this appears to be a nice usable keyboard for the price, there are a few negative comments from users of this product but the majority of these seem to be fairly based on personal preferences or on certain games that were being played, no keyboard can be perfect for every type of game especially for this money and overall the Sidewinder X6 gaming keyboard is rated highly by the majority of gamers who bought it.
On the minus side there are no USB or headset sockets it also lacks feet, the side keys are attached with magnets so care is needed when picking the unit up or they may fall off.
Overall the X6 represents good value for money. For build quality, performance, key operation and low light operation user score this unit well above average.
