Tournament History

This clay court mens tournament was once part of the Grand Prix circuit. The first Nice Open, which was held in 1971, was known as the Nice International Championships. Ilie Nstase of Romania was the inaugural champion of the event. Other past winners include Bjrn Borg, Marc Rosset and Yannick Noah. Since its beginnings, the tournament has undergone several name changes. The event was not held from 1996 to 2009. In late 2009, an announcement was made that the tournament would be revitalized as part of the World Tour 250 series and would be referred to as the Nice Open for the first time. Play resumed in the spring of 2010 and will continue to be held as an annual event every May. A doubles event has also been added to the schedule.

Top Contenders

This years tournament will feature several skilled players who are looking to improve their rankings. Heavy favorites include John Isner of the United States and Simon Gilles of France who are ranked 10th and 12th in the world respectively. Nicholas Almargo of Spain, who is currently ranked 13th, is also considered to be a tournament favorite. Last years winner, 18th ranked Rickard Gasquet of France, will be eager to defend his title.
