subject: Steel Pipe Fittings [print this page]

Steel pipes are tubular sections or hollow cylinders, most commonly in the form of a circular cross-section but this is not always the case. They are used to transport water, gas, slurries or liquids in domestic and commercial environments. Steel pipes are also used for high-performance (e.g. high-pressure, high flow, high temperature, hazardous materials, etc) conveyance of materials for special applications as well as for structural use and scaffolding. Steel of various grades is a common and preferred material of choice for these purposes because of its strength, hardness, resistance to corrosion and extreme resistance to heat.

Steel pipe fittings are utilised in pipe and plumbing systems to join straight pipes or tubing sections, to adapt to different shapes or sizes, to regulate or measure flow and pressure, and for various other purposes. Pipe fittings are a critical part of piping and plumbing systems. They are expensive, time consuming and complicated to design and install, particularly the uncommon types.

The most commonly used steel pipe fittings include elbows, couplings, joints, flanges, wyes, tees, nipples, valves, cross, cap, olets, barbs, threaded pipes, and compression fitting and countless variations of these. In addition, hundreds of kinds of customized steel pipe fittings may be produced to meet specific requirements. Piping or tubing is mostly inserted into fittings to make connections. To avoid confusion, connections are conventionally assigned a gender of male or female, respectively abbreviated as "M" or "F".

Steel pipe fitting may also refer to processes such as welding, soldering, brazing, etc.all of which are used to join sections of tube or pipe.
