subject: Self-adhesive Tape [print this page]

Self-adhesive tapes are used for a number of different things such as packaging, sealing, insulation and medical/surgical applications. They are used in all environmentsdomestic, industrial, medical and academic. Industrial applications of self-adhesive tapes span virtually every kind of industry conceivable. The list is practically endlessin aeronautics, automotive, electrical, electronic, construction etc.

Self-adhesive tapes have become such a ubiquitous part of our daily lives that we may be forgiven for thinking that theyve been around forever. However, self-adhesive tapes were developed in 1845 by a surgeon Dr. Horace Day. Commercial use of self-adhesive tapes began in the early 20th century and spread very quickly.

Self-adhesive tape is a pressure sensitive tape that sticks without the application of heat, solvents, water or any other external aids. The tapes are manufactured by coating pressure sensitive adhesive over a backing material such as paper, cloth, plastic film, or metal foil. Some tapes have a removable release liner that protects the adhesive until used. Specialized self-adhesive tapes can have layers of adhesives, easy release materials, primers, filaments, printing, etc., each added for a specific reason.

Self-adhesive tapes can be single or double-sided. Single-sided tapes allow bonding of a material to a surface, or joining of two overlapping or adjacent materials. Double-sided tape, with adhesive on both sides, allows two items to join back-to-back.

Self-adhesive tape is produced by coating the adhesive (usually synthetic resin with other additives) over the backing material, which is then cut to the required dimensions. After the coating process is completed, the tape is then put in a heat chamber to ensure proper bonding of the adhesive with the backing material. The adhesive tape is finally rolled on spools prepared for the purpose. The entire process is environmentally friendly. There are no by-products, and wastes are generally minimal.

From new product development to augmenting existing products, Tape Specialities Ltd. provides a full range of development and manufacturing services in delivering high performance self-adhesive tapes for a variety of specialized applications. Our products are utilised in sectors such as medical devices, diagnostics, pharmaceutical, defence, industrial manufacturing, electronics, marine, and security printing.
