subject: Visit the brand-new Western Super Mare! [print this page]

Today I was about to experience something completely new which I had been saving for some time and until I had a free day to indulge myself. I should tell you that Weston Super Mare and surrounding areas are particularly lovely in the autumn time.

For a number of months I've been looking forward to a small treat which today I was going to enjoy. They first started to construct the woodland walk pathway through Weston Super Mare woods back in the winter and early spring of 2010.

I am fortunate enough to live in a small village called Kewstoke which is situated just north of Weston Super Mare and is on a long sandy beach. You can reach my village by driving along the coast road from Weston which winds its way through the woods on the top of the cliffs and provides really stunning views of Wales.

It was a warm and sunny early October morning without a puff of breeze. To get to the new pathway I had to leave my home and walk through the village and up and past the Castle restaurant into the edge of the Woodlands, this was a new route to me which I never tried before.

The tide was in and the sea was a deep blue as it glistened and sparkled in the earlyautumn sunlight. Today Cardiff, which was approximately 10 miles away, looked so clear it appeared as if it had crept 6 miles closer overnight.

The walk as expected was exceptionally enjoyable and the autumn tones in the leaves which were starting to change colour was fantastic and promised to get even better in the next few weeks. I re-emerged into full sunlight thirty five minutes later at the southern end of the toll road and decided to extend my journey and walk approximately mile further and as far as the new recently build Grand Pier.

I followed the pathway past the old pier and under the Victorian hotels which stood proudly and looked out to sea and Steepholm a small island a few miles out in the estuary, and across the ocean bridge at the marine lake. When I got to Knightstone island I realised I hadn't passed anyone else on my pleasant morning stroll and now I could enjoy the whole journey again as I returned back home again while enjoying the pleasures of an open top bus.

As I sat for a few minutes and admired the structure of the Grand Pier I counted my blessings as not for the first time I acknowledged what a privileged place I lived as West Super Mare and the surrounding area is a fantastic place to visit and spend a holiday or short break, but a place which I get to enjoy almost every day of the year!
