subject: How Scarcity Thinking Versus Abundance Thinking Begins With the Leadership Decisions You Make [print this page]

The decisions or choices we make are determined by the choices we have. These words were recently spoken at a health conference and specific to the challenge of obesity. When I heard this statement, internally I was appalled. After viewing all the positive non-verbal body language I was seeing in the audience, I become externally appalled as well. My thought was no wonder we have an obese society here in America because personal leadership has died.

This statement, the decisions of choices we make as leaders are determined by the choices we have, is a great example of scarcity leadership thinking. When human beings have an attitude, mindset or belief that they have limitations, then their behaviors will reflect that belief. For it is our beliefs that drive our actions (behaviors) creating our results.

Using obesity as an example, many families have limited access (scarcity) to vegetables and fruits be them fresh or frozen. Their diets are supplemented by high carbohydrate foods such as pasta, noodles, breads etc. causing increase weight. Scarcity thinking says OK I have limited food options and I need to eat.

Now what would happen if after eating that high calorie meal, the individual engages in a 15 to 30 minute walk or some in house exercises such as jumping jacks, sit ups or push ups? This person accepts the limited diet, however understands as a leader there exists additional options or opportunities. Of course even a better behavior is to stop eating when the brain receives that first sign of being full.

In life we have a plethora of leadership choices. We can sit in front of the computer, television or mobile device and while away our time. Or we can choose to take a break every 10 to 20 minutes and walk around for 5 minutes.

Each morning we can awaken with an attitude that today will be the best day ever even if it is pouring down rain, our bones ache from all the humidity and there is a lot of uncertainty in our lives. For we do have unlimited choices as long as we believe in a leadership attitude of abundance instead of one of scarcity.

Just imagine if all the great inventors, scientists, explorers and other leaders believed that their decisions or choices were determined by the available choices. Would we have ever had the:

Printing press?

Polio vaccine?

Non-violent demonstrations?

Computers?

Internet?

Henry Ford understood both scarcity and opportunity leadership thinking when he stated these words: Whether you think you can or you think you cannot, either way you are right.
