subject: Medical Scrubs Provide Entertainment For Patients [print this page]

There is perhaps no more tense place than the hospital. Whether in the emergency room handling an injury that came out of nowhere or in a long-term care facility room, there is something inherently uncomfortable about the hospital for many people. Obviously, hospital visits for any reason can be traumatic, both emotionally and physically, for everyone involved. And while the doctors and surgeons in a hospital have the job of improving the health of those who require treatment, it can still be scary to find oneself in the hospital. There is always a foreboding sense of uncertainty, with many what ifs on the table whenever a loved one is receiving treatment. However, there is one way in which the stress, fear and trauma can be eased by the care of the nurses. Nurses tend to perform many tasks, and among them is providing a more human touch than the doctors and surgeons who often deliver bad news and perform operations. Nurses can help promote psychological and emotional well-being in many ways, including by their outfits. Many patients explain that medical scrubs with colors and neat designs tend to be entertaining and can help take the stiffness out of a hospital visit.

Although medical scrubs are considered by many physicians and surgeons to be among the least valuable tools in a hospital, they can be quite beneficial for patients. Seeing a brightly colored, perhaps humorously designed outfit when in a highly stressful situation can provide a sense of relief and release that can help take ones mind off of his or her problems in an instant. When relief from stress is so difficult to come by, it can be great to have a laugh in the hospital. This is particularly relevant because mood can have a great effect on the amount of pain people feel, on how well they heal, and how they perceive their situation. Many studies have shown that a positive mental attitude can have a significant impact on ones physical health. Thus, seeing something pleasant and getting a laugh or even a smile out of the exchange can help improve a patients quality of life and chance at recovery.

Sometimes medical scrubs and other tools of the trade can be overlooked, but that doesnt mean they are not important. Anything that can help a patient feel better can make a world of difference to someone in the hospital.
