Powerlifting competition takes place around the globe but mostly in Canada, United States, Russia, United Kingdom, and Ukraine. In India, the sport is managed under the Indian Power Lifting Federation. Indian Powerlifting Federation was founded in 1975 and Indian Power lifting Federation is a member of the International Power lifting Federation (IPF), the governing body of Power lifting internationally. Indian P/L Federation organizes local and regional events, based on which a successful candidate qualifies for national events. It gives a fair opportunity to the candidates to test their performance against other candidates while giving them hope to participate in national events as top competitors are selected by Indian Power lifting Federation to participate and compete in seven IPF world championships- the World Men's and Women's Power lifting Championships, World Junior and Sub-Junior Power lifting Championships, World Master's Power lifting Championships, the World Bench Press Championships, and World Master's Bench Press Championships, Asian Championships & Also Commonwealth Power lifting Championship.

About the Competition

The entire competition is segregated as smallest w-class to heaviest in which each competitor is allowed to take three to four attempts on each lift as per the standing and the organization they are lifting in. The outcome is calculated based on the lifters best valid attempt on each lift and in case if two lifters have the same total the lighter lifter is considered above the heavier lifter. In the competition, each competitor is categorized as per gender, age, and weight class. Some other methods are also used to compare the two lifters and scores of different weight classes by using handicapping systems like Wilks formula.
