subject: World Population Day - 2012 [print this page] Globally, the increase of people reaching childbearing years will create a jump in our populations growth. Participating in World Population Day helps build awareness for the problem that so many people on our planet can create.
Changes do need to take place in order for all people to live in harmony with our environment, disregarding the impact we have on resources puts our planet at risk. Systems need to be put in place which will help our future generations as well as the present. The governing council of the United Nations Development Program created the awareness day in 1989, in hopes that by having an international day people all over the world would want to learn different ways to work with the planet.
The UNFPA started collecting data as a first step to making decisions. When you have data to make decisions with, you make better ones. In 2010 the theme was everyone counts this theme was to create awareness about taking the census. In the past before the UNFPA was formed people talked about how human being were impacting our planet but didnt really have a focus. We now have a leader for planet awareness in UNFPA.
World Population Day puts its focus in front of the people. Agency groups and organizations work closely with UNFPA to collect and analyze estimates and population projections and development ideas.
This year take a look around in your community, what events are going on? If you dont see anything, call your local township and ask what they have going on. If they havent put something together for 2012 encourage them for 2013. Consider putting together a house or block party to help people focus on international day. Make up some games that stimulate ideas with the children, they are the future so we should be helping them think about what their world should look like and feel like when the grow up.
It can be worth your while to go talk to your local YMCA, what plans do they have for World Population Day? If you have a state representative in your area you can find out what they have going on, and if the answer is nothing, you can push for something to be done. Local organizations have an interest in helping bring about awareness in the community.
