Ford Galaxy Rising From Zero To A Hero Status

Originally launched in 1995, Galaxy took on Toyota Pervia and finally forced them to quit European market. Joint venture of AutoEuropa with VW group enabled Ford to launch Galaxy with aggressive pricing in Europe, Toyota couldnt compete in that niche with such marginal profits so they discontinued Previa, though its still launched in Japan and Australia. Galaxy shares same platform with VWs Sharan and Seats Alhambra, both Sharan and Galaxy are market leaders in MPV category.

Initially Ford Galaxy engines were produced by VW and so was he case with automatic transmission, however manual gearbox units were manufactured by Ford. Initially after some poor reviews, Ford introduced massive redesigning thus despite sharing same production facility, its models appeared distinctly Ford-ish. By its third generation, Ford pulled out Galaxy from AutoEuropa altogether and increased its dimensions as well.

Now Ford uses its own petrol engines and utilizes its Duratorq series of diesel engines in Galaxy. These engines vary from 1.3 litre petrol to 2.3 litre diesel, producing anywhere from 123 to 203 bhp. Despite being one of the more powerful MPVs, it still manages to lead the category in fuel consumption, it touts 37.4 MPG. Because of features like these, it is not only a popular family vehicle but its also the preferred choice for commercial consumers like Addison lee. The largest operator of mini cabs in London has struck an extended 2 year deal with American automaker.

Considering the fact that first generation of Galaxy was ranked as the least satisfying car in Britain, third generation has become the most successful MPV, this turnaround is anything but amazing. Ford Galaxy engine is as big contributor in this success, as any other factor. Though horsepower has increased over the years, fuel consumption and C02 emissions have decreased, thus reducing running cost of vehicle.

Most of its models are ranked favorably by insurance groups and are relatively cheaper to insure, with exception of Titanium series. Edge, LX and Ghia are leading the way as they are ranked in 16th band whereas Titanium can go as high as 27th band. Other comparable European and Japanese models are also ranked similarly but they come short in fuel efficiency, space and engine power. If Toyota Previa is re-launched, then authority of Galaxy could be challenged but currently it is destined to rule UKs roads as there are no eminent signs of any drop in its desirability.
