subject: Choosing Home Decor For Your Home [print this page]

Whether you are buying a new home or redoing a single room, choosing the right home decor is key to the enjoyment that you will get from it. Fortunately, the Home Decor options in stores today is almost limitless, the problem is making the right choice. These home decorating items and even ideas seem to be available everywhere at every store. It is easy to coordinate your home or room around a hobby, something that you collect, a color, or theme.

Take a Look Around for Ideas

Before you make any decisions regarding home decor choices, it is always wise to look around for ideas. If you have friends whose style you admire, ask to take a look at their house. Browse through the home section of home improvement stores for additional ideas and to get an idea of pricing. Another great way to spend an afternoon before redecorating is to peruse a furniture store. The nice thing about spending time in a furniture store is that they are set up with different decors all in one place. They also have several room setups, everything from living rooms and kitchens to bedrooms and dens. You may have to deal with a few salespeople, but finding your decorating style will be worth the trouble.

Narrow Down Theme Ideas

After you have done some research and have a pretty good idea of what you want your room (or rooms) to look like, its time to narrow the ideas down to a couple of your favorites. While it may seem difficult at first to decide on only a couple, it is simpler if you think about the color (or colors) that you want to use in the room first. After you know the colors that you are going to use, decide on whether or not you are going to want to use a hobby or collectible as a focal point for the space. When planning what the room will look like, dont forget about accent items such as picture frames, lamps and artwork. These will need to be incorporated into the overall home decor as well.

Go Get It - Shop 'Til You Drop

Now that you know what you want your room to look like, you have decided on the color and the anchor theme, its time to shop. This is the most exciting part, what you have been working toward and waiting for. The easiest way to get the items to decorate with is to go to a home furnishings store, however, this is probably not going to be the most inexpensive way to get the room redecorated. If money is an issue, there are so many great places to shop. If you dont mind some second hand, unique items for your room, then checking out local resale or charity shops should be on your list. While finding things here can be a hit or miss situation and you may have to visit several stores or the same stores several times, but when you score just the right item, the search will be worth it.

Now that you know exactly what you want your home to look like, go out and make it.
