subject: Making The Heating Green Switch [print this page]

Now more than ever, the trend of going green is sweeping, not only the United States, but the entire world. Countries all over are reducing their pollution levels, making vehicles more efficient, and helping lower the world's carbon footprint. As consumers, we are no different; people are looking to help save the environment while saving money on their energy bill at the same time. After all, who doesn't love a win-win situation? While helping out Mother Nature is a great perk, it's even greater when some saved cash can be added into the mix.

One such tactic that can be considered is by how you heat your home. During the winter (especially for those living in frigid temperatures), heating costs and efforts can skyrocket. But, by making your heating efforts more efficient, you can help save money and save energy, Many heating green tips are even easier than you may think.

Energy Saving Materials

When building a new home, there are plenty more heat saving options that are available. Energy saving windows, doors, paneling, etc., can all be put into place to help keep heat in and the cold out (and vice versa during the summer). For those already living in their home, there are plenty of steps for you to take as well. Buy quality caulking materials and make sure all windows and foundation cracks are sealed and sealed tightly. Thick curtains or even specialty-made blinds can help block temperature flow from traveling through windows.

Other Effective Tips

Several other tactics can be put into place as well. Oftentimes saving energy can be as easy as being conservative with the thermostat. You can also implement heating methods such as a hybrid heater or purchasing a geothermal heating and cooling system. (These models can be found at your local HVAC shop.) Solar heating and cooling efforts are also a great way to lower fuel costs and increase home comfort, no matter the time of year. Creating a green roof - a roof that is covered with grasses and other plants - is another way to help go green. The plants will help insulate the roof, while also helping reduce pollution levels by evening out oxygen levels surrounding your office or home.

Solar Heating 101

When it comes to using the sun's energy, more than just lowered energy bills can be achieved. Government subsidies can be gained in the form of tax deductions by setting up your own solar panels. There are also companies which offer equipment leasing, so long as you purchase all the electricity said equipment produces. Although, for the most part, leases have found they are still coming out on top and saving money. Many also find this option preferable as they are not in charge of any maintenance or equipment failure, which can be expensive when buying panels outright.

As you can see, there are a number of tactics that can be used to help cut down on energy bills - both in usage and cost. Try some of these tips - from as simple as adjusting your thermostat to as advanced as putting in solar panels - to help make the switch to heating (and cooling) green today.
