subject: Relevance Of Redirections In Website Design [print this page]

It is quite common for the website design companies all over the world to apply redirection for varied purposes. The redirection is basically oriented for the users and also for the search engines. This means that using this redirection, the webmasters make either the users or the search engines to read or not-to-read certain web pages.

There are many different types of redirections, depending on the purpose and the place in the website where these are sought to be applied. So, if you have a new name to the website and want the users to lead to the new website, then the most common form of redirection applied is that of permanent movement, that is the 301 redirection. However, if the movement is temporary, then the 302 redirection is most commonly applied. Further, there is also a common requirement that the website URLs need to change. This requirement often arises in situations where the search engine optimization of the website needs to be done. For this purpose, there could be a need to make the URLs static and also for applying redirection in situations where there is need to prevent the search engines from reading the content as duplicate. The latter situation arises in situations where the ecommerce websites have the same products listed in two different categories or there is a need to apply the redirection from non-www web pages to the www based web pages.

Further, this redirection could be done at the level of meta-tagging or by uploading the files with appropriate codes on the server. Using the right codes, it is possible to effect the changes at the level of a page or over the whole of website. So, the redirection could be by way of uploading the .htaccess files or even by incorporating the meta- canonical redirections. The nature of the files to be uploaded for effecting redirection depends on the type of server on which the website is hosted and the programming language in which the site is developed.

For the website designers and SEO service providers, it is important that the redirection is applied judiciously. There is a tendency to use the variants of redirections for hoodwinking the search engines for increasing the rankings or for hiding the real content from the users or even for making the users and search engines read the web pages differently from each other. Search engines do punish those redirections which are used for misleading the users or the search engines but it is safe to use them in situations which warrant their genuine usage. For this reason, the 301 redirects and the canonical redirects are considered safer and the website design companies do have any problem in incorporating these.
