Ahhh..yes...the pieAhhh..yes...the pie. The thing we are all trying to get our hands on. Now, I'm talking about a pie chart, but this is a good example of what we all want. A big piece of a big pie.

But here's the problem. Right now the pie is shrinking. The good news is that it will eventually grow again, but what do we do in the meantime?

You scramble to get a bigger slice on your plate and in your struggles, your inner dialog kicks in. It whispers, "It's the economy. No one is doing well. You ought to wait this out..."

History is full of people we never heard of because of that inner dialog.

Here's some advice: Be bold. Do what others aren't doing...yet. And build your business even while the economy is in the dumps. The question is how do you build your business... even now?

We are in new times and new times require new strategies. Allow me to throw out a few ideas.

1. Leverage everything you can using the internet. In a lot of cases you can produce a great local campaign on a shoestring budget. 60% of searches for a local business or product start on the internet. If you're not plugged into local directories (many of them free) you are getting lost.

2. Embrace new ideas that will get you the most customers in the shortest period of time. This includes Facebook and its half a billion users, Twitter and blogging. By the way...Don't blow-off Facebook. There are 6 Billion people on this planet. A HALF Billion of them are on Facebook.

3. Become an expert in your field. Already an expert? Great! Let others know you're an expert. And I don't mean by bragging on a webpage. What I mean is share your expertise and others will follow you. You don't think you qualify as an expert? Shame on you! Being an expert isn't that hard. Find something you're passionate about and know it well and do it all the time. You'll be an expert.

Right now, internet video is a huge content provider on the web. It's a great way to build your brand and get your message across by appealing to all of the viewer's senses. When it is properly executed and not a sales pitch it is a wonderful media. You're not limited to 30 or 60 seconds like a radio or TV commercial AND you appear in a search engine result at the exact time a prospect is most interested.

What's the next big thing? I'm guessing mobile. Did you know that yesterday alone there were 200,000 Droid phones sold? That's just one kind of smart phone. It says nothing about the number of IPhones and BlackBerry's and all the other kinds of phones out there. There are certain strategies to employ to make the most of that medium and I'm excited about it. I have already got a couple of ideas testing and will be releasing them soon.

After that, who knows?
