Normally, tourists associate Playa del Carmen and the surrounding towns of Cozumel and Tulum with sun and sand. But there is a lot more to these tourist destinations. The region was a part of Mayan civilization and is a treasure trove for those who are fascinated by ancient and exotic civilizations. The art and cultural scene is thriving in Playa del Carmen and gives ample opportunities to tourists to take a sneak peek at the Mexican culture.

One such glorious festival is The Sacred Mayan Journey which will take place in Xcaret. Already in to its sixth edition, the festival sees huge and enthusiastic participation by all and sundry.

The event aims to recreate an ancient Mayan tradition in which the bravehearts used to cross the ocean on their canoes to reach the island of Cozumel to worship the goddess Ixchel. This was an annual pilgrimage in those times.

To celebrate and honor this tradition many events are held across the region. In Xcaret Park, the festivities commence. More than 300 Mexican artists display the incredibly rich folklore and music of the region. The guests will also get to sample the ancient Maya lifestyle by shopping in traditional Mayan shops. Extensive rituals will also be conducted as a part of goddess Ixchels worship. The next day, the local tribal chiefs known as Bataoobs and the high Priest of Ppole lead the blessing ceremony and bid farewell to the oarsmen who will cross the ocean over to Cozumel. The oarsmen will take the offerings of the people for the goddess in the ancient sanctuary in Cutzamil, Cozumel. On their arrival to the island, children, young and elderly women dance to welcome the oarsmen. They also perform the dances of death and the new fire, before they visit the Sanctuary and their departure toward Xamanh-Playa del Carmen to begin a new era.

The oarsmen then arrive to the Village of Xamanh, Playa del Carmen, where they are welcomed by the tribal chief and priest amid dancing and celebration by the womenfolk.

The whole festival spread over 3 days from May 17th May19th is an enthralling affair which leaves the guests spellbound with awe and wonder.

This time, Xcaret, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen will be all dressed in white to celebrate the 6th Sacred Mayan Journey, the Celebration of a New Era.
