subject: Cleaning Your Car During The Hosepipe Ban [print this page]

Despite the recent rainy weather, several water companies in the UK have imposed a hosepipe ban to help conserve water due to a drought. While this is necessary, it leaves many people across the country with a bit of a conundrum on how to water their gardens and how to clean their cars.

Cleaning your car regularly is quite important to maintain its appearance and also to help keep certain car parts running smoothly. While it can be tempting to simply give up doing the job during a hosepipe ban, there are actually a number of ways you can wash your car without having to flout the ban and risking a fine:

Before washing, pour a watering can over your car's bodywork to help shift loose dirt and grit that may have built up

Invest in a bottle of 'waterless wash', a clever product that you simply spray on and wipe off without the need for water

Buy an 'active brush', which is a brush that contains a water chamber, allowing you to gently apply water as you clean

Do it the old-fashioned way with a bucket of soapy water and a sponge!

Of course, if you live in an area of the country where there isn't a ban in place, you won't need to resort to such measures just yet. However, there are several regions that are currently on the brink of drought and where the water companies have asked people to help conserve water, in order to prevent having to impose restrictions in the future.

If you live in one of these areas, you may want to take certain steps to reduce the amount of water you use during everyday tasks. When cleaning the garden patio or washing the car, you may wish to use a pressure washer instead of using the hose. This is because pressure washers get the job done much faster and therefore use less water, saving you time, money and conserving water along the way.

Another benefit of this is that pressure washers are much better at shifting caked-on dirt than a sponge or a hosepipe, and you can buy specialist detergents to use for your car. The result will be a car that looks as good as new, helping to maintain its appearance and also helping to keep it running smoothly, hopefully saving you maintenance costs in the future.
