subject: Pamplona 2012 Bull Run - Spain - Run With The Bulls From Only 50 Per Day Per Person! [print this page] The festival of San Fermin, or bull running at Pamplona as it's more widely known across the world, begins at midday on the 6th July every year. The 'chupinazo' starts the event on the terrace of the Casa Consistorial, in Pamplona. Thousands and thousands of festival goers wait in the town square below, waiting the mayor's official start to the fiesta, a firework is launched and the partying begins. Prior to the bull running, the bulls testicles are electocuted - to make the really mad, and then they are set free, knocking over anything that gets in there way!
The history of bull running in Pamplona dates back hundreds of years, and there is history of the fiesta as far back as the 13th century, when it seems the festival occured in October - this coincided with the fiesta of San Fermin on October 10th.
The first proof of foreigners arriving for the Pamplona bull running for the San Fermin festival date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The local church were concerned about the abuse of alcohol, and the liberal attitudes of young males and females. Also then the religious focus of the event had disappeared and instead music, dancing, street artists, getting drunk and the bull running has clearly taken over.
In the 19th century fairground rides and attractions were arriving in Pamplona, alongside circus acts. There was no double security wall as there is today, and the bulls could escape and created havoc right across Pamplona. An American Ernest Hemingway, wrote about Pamplona in his 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises", attracting tourists from all over the world. Now the event is so popular that crowds are a problem and now you should book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
