The design brief is an outline for your idea. You need to identify a use for the product, such as solving a problem. The restrictions of the product then needs to be considered. This will include how this product will be used and if it will meet any specific need.

Sketch Ideas

Ideas that are in your head need to be put down on paper. The image that you draw does not need to be perfect at this point. You want to get the specific shape, details and dimensions. Multiple sketches may need to be made until you are satisfied with the result.

Product Assembly

This is how the product is put together. Depending on the type of design, your product and can be hand made, or assembled using digital tools. This is the fabrication method and materials that will be used in the final construction.

Create a template of the design on your computer. Many online services are available online that accept digital files but they need to be formatted to their specifications. You will need to use software to create your digital design file.

Create Prototype

This is the part of the process where you create a working version of your design. You can make one or many prototypes until you are satisfied with the product. When a prototype has been made you are then able to see if any changes need to be made.

Product Examination

Identify any characteristics of your product that can be improved. You may need to change a part or the material used for construction. This process requires making an new prototype and assessment.

Selling Price

When you have the prototype complete, a price point is required. This involves determining all of your costs from construction to shipping. You will also need to take into consideration any extra elements in the price point calculation such as printed instructions. You need to determine a wholesale price for the product and a retail price.

Product Availability

Create an online marketplace where you can offer your product for sale. You can also sell your product offline at specific retail outlets.

Product Promotion

Advertising of your product is the last step for a design success. This can be done online or by demonstrating your product in person at trade shows and fairs.
