From that point on, Headhunters title rapidly turns literal, and what seemed like a lightweight heist thriller careens into a bloody-minded game of cat and mouse. Hennie has never faced more than a prison term, but all of a sudden hes running for his life, fleeing an adversary whose specialty is tracking others down. Bodily fluids flow freely, faces are turned to pulp, and an outhouse serves as a hiding place of last resort. Hennie, whose sub-average height serves as a motivator for his characters one-upsmanship, is one of his countrys biggest domestic stars (Headhunters just missed the box-office record set by his 2008 film Max Manus), but here, hes a perpetually endangered underdog, struggling to remain the hero of his own story. Scarred, humiliated, and eventually shorn, he looks less and less the part of a leading man, while the implacable Coster-Waldau seems to travel with his own touch-up team, forever hovering just out of frame. Not everyone can play the lead, of course, and theres a nobility in accepting that fact. The increased life expectancy is merely a fringe benefit.
I cant remember the last time a movie surprised me as much as Headhunters: not just its story twists and turns, which are considerable, but its continual stripping of character veneer and overall audaciousness left me breathless. I havent read any of the growingly-popular novels by Norwegian author Jo Nesb (whose reputation has grown in the past few years, possibly in the wake of Swedens Stieg Larsson), but if this is indicative of his storytelling skills, Im impressed.The film captures our attention right away by introducing us to its highly unlikely hero, a smug, high-level corporate headhunter who plays to win. Hes even won himself a beautiful wife, although he admits that the expensive, ultramodern house in which they live is more her taste than his. Then he explains, in voice-over narration, that he has a second source of income to support his expensive lifestyle: he is a successful art thief. When his wife opens a stylish new gallery and befriends a newcomer who happens to own a valuable Rubens painting, he simply cant resist going after it, with the help of a partner who works for a home-security firm.
To reveal much more would rob the film of its many layers and revelations; lets just say that it matches its plot complications with scenes of action and suspense that rival any Hollywood has to offer.Actor Aksel Hennie, who plays the job recruiter/thief is a popular star in Norway, but this demanding and wide-ranging performance should put him on the world stage. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognize the movies second male lead, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, a robustly handsome man who throws several monkey wrenches into Hennies plans. (Hes also appeared in two films for director Ridley Scott, Black Hawn Down andKingdom of Heaven).Director Morten Tyldum realizes all the potential in the ingenious script by Lars Gudmstead and Ulf Ryberg (whose credits include the screenplay of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest and one episode of Wallander). My wife, who read Headhunters, actually likes the film better than the novel, and tells me that the screenwriters made one substantial change involving the female characters. Whatever they did, it works.
When we meet Roger, hes happily married to a gorgeous woman (Synnve Macody Lund), having a fling on the side and preparing to help himself to the priceless Munch lithograph owned by high-flying Swedish executive and former elite soldier Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Of course, we know its all a ploy that Greve is luring Roger in for his own devious reasons, and that things are about to go horribly wrong but its how Nesb and Tyldum spring the trap thats so enjoyable to watch. Its a timely film, too: while Nesb and Tyldums prime directive is to give their audience a good bracing shake, they also find time to throw in a few witty, thoughtful asides about personal responsibility and the ways in which the relentless pursuit of wealth conflict with the achievement of true happiness. But none of this would matter a jot if Tyldum didnt have such a firm grasp of his material. The plot moves like a rocket, the despicable characters are marvellously sketched, and if Headhunters is not always entirely convincing (a few twists take a bit of swallowing), its always deliriously entertaining. Anyone tired of the surly, leather-jacketed seriousness of the Millennium trilogy and looking for more spark and spice in their Scandinavian crime sagas need seek no further. Pure joy.Bearing a resemblance to Stieg Larssons Millennium Trilogy at least so far as language family is concerned, Headhunters is the best Norwegian thriller to come to our shores in years and among the most exciting psychological dramas an American audience will be treated to in quite a while. The acting is outrageously good, the plot twists come to us at a furious pace, the music on the soundtrack is spot-on and perhaps not even needed since the gore that shocks us every now and then is scary enough without it. Headhunters has elements of horror, detective story, nourish comedy, all in the service of a sophisticated tale of a handsome but short corporate recruitment officer with a penchant for fine art.

And dont forget his smashing suits and the jewelry he regularly bestows on his wife, a woman who is a head taller than Roger, the kind of woman that Rog hasnt the self-confidence to think he can keep this person in his arms unless he gives her every material good he cannot affordincluding his Lexus automobile. We are not surprised to discover from the opening scenes that Herr Brown is an art thief, one who meticulously plans not only an almost foolproof way to sneak into the houses of collectors, substitute copies after removing the canvas from the frames, and making off with an authentic Rubens or other artworks du jour. He has the help of Ove Kikerud (Elvind Sander), a security officer who appears to control every alarm system of the communitys upper class.
