subject: How Important Is Regression Testing In Finding Hidden Bugs? [print this page]

These days, there is lot many things happening in software application automation. To analyze the user friendly interface of the application its regression testing is mandatory. The new automated mode in regression testing helps testers in finding more accurate results, so to make reliable modifications. Regression testing is conducted when there are any changes done in coding. All the changed codes should be checked with a regression test in order to measure their efficacy. Regression test is conducted quite often by the engineers when code modification is done. It should be taken very sincerely to identify the bugs.

Automated regression test belongs to the new generation regression testing. It is built to cross over those limitations that are involved in typical regression testing. Sometimes, test engineers were unable to test multiple test cases for regression because of the test suite. During this scenario, an automated regression test becomes very handy for test engineers. It covers application functions of thousands of test cases.

There remains one big question unanswered regarding regression testing, that what would be the right time to begin the test. It can be conducted anytime during programming as soon as programmer introduces new codes or modify old codes. The idea of regression test is to analysis the functionality of software or an application when the new codes are implemented or the old codes are re written. Also sometimes regression tests are conducted to look after the recent technical changes in the system. It can be conducted any time during the minor or major changes of any kind done in the system. Software needs to go through various sets of regression testing during its development.

At the time when regression test is running, there are many things that needs to be followed in order to track the test. Sometimes, a bug may also occur during the test that can even hamper the test results. In that context, a test has to be re run. It may also require for the test engineer to compare the test results from the previous tests.

A regression test needs to be successfully executed till the time it requires to deliver the output in the form of bugs. It also depends on the features of the application. The time of regression test is been accessed on the scope of the features of the application included in the test case.

Regression testing and GUI (Graphic user interface) goes parallel. Sometimes it becomes very difficult to conduct regression test when there are modifications done in the GUI structure. Though, the test case can be updated based on the changes in the GUI, but modifying many test cases can become a hectic job for the tester.
