subject: Schooling For Dentistry [print this page]

The basic dental educational requirement for dentist school is a high school education and at least two years of college education to be accepted or for a dentist school to choose a dentist-to-be. However, almost every dentist-to-be entering dental school will take the care and time to be a college graduate before applying to dental school. Because, for a dental school to choose a dentist-to-be from any area as part of their dental school student-body, a dentist-to-be wants to be and look their best for dentistry admission.

Not only must a dentist-to-be show good past academic studies and past achievements, but a dentist-to-be must pass what is called a dental-aptitude test before a dental school will select a dental student-to-be. This dental test will help the dentist school choose those students who show more inclination to success within dental studies and dental subjects.

After the dentist school pre-dental education and dental test requirements the dentist school will choose its dentist-to-be students from those who apply to the dental school. The general dentistry studies at dental school will last for four years of dentistry courses.

The beginning two years of dentistry studies within dentist school are devoted to dental lab techniques and learning basic dental and medical sciences. A dentist school will emphasize more of the dental clinic or dentistry clinical parts of dental school studies during the last two years of dentist school. During those last two years of dental school studies a dentist-to-be will actually do dental procedures on real dental patients.

Once a dentist-to-be student of dental school has completed their four years of dental school studies the dentist-to-be will receive his/her D.D.S. Degree which means Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree. Or, depending upon what a dentist will choose to study and focus on during four years of dental studies the dentist-to-be will receive his/her D.M.D. Degree which means Doctor of Dental Medicine.

Completing dentist school and receiving a dental degree is the main step and the longest step to practice dentistry. Once a dentist has his/her dental degree, the dentist-to-be must pass the local dental board exam. This local dental board exam is required for a dentist to become licensed to practice. So, the next step is for a dentist to choose where he/she wants to practice dentistry and then find out what the local dental requirements are for opening a dentistry and for obtaining a dentist license to practice dentistry services in that area.

All United States and Canadian provinces follow these dental requirements, that a dentist must pass a local dental board exam. So, a dentist-to-be may also choose to open a dentistry practice within Canada with the same DDS or DMD degree. Another factor in where a dentist will choose to open a dentistry is also if that area accepts and approves the dentist school where the dentist-to-be obtained his/her dental degree.

Local dental societies usually work with local government officials to establish dental licensing rules and the dental licensing exam. The biggest of the dental associations is called the American Dental Association which works to inspect dentist schools and to produce dentist school materials and dental educational matter for the general public.
