La Jolla, Californias history dates back thousands of years. There have been artifacts found from Native Americans dating back 10,000 years ago. With so few artifacts found, it is difficult to determine much about its first inhabitants. The name La Jolla has many theories as to how and when it came to be. Some believe that the Spanish word La Joya, meaning the jewel, provided the name while others believe that a Native American term Woholle, meaning hole in the mountains, is the true origin. It is highly unlikely that the truth will ever be known.

La Jolla became a part of San Diego in 1850 however; people didnt live there until nearly 20 years later. The community and its surrounding city grew slowly with things really taking off once the railroad came through in the 1890s. It became much easier to reach the area, so real estate developers started to sell oceanfront property, even back then! With sprawling estates, more modest homes and everything in between, La Jolla Real Estate continues to flourish. The first hotel opened in 1893 to accommodate the surge of travelers and visitors who wanted to see the beautiful area.

At the turn of the last century, there were only about 350 residents in the area. Then, as tourism started to boom, and after the end of the First World War, La Jolla had close to 4,000 residents. After the Second World War, nearly 7,700 people lived there, and the number continued to climb quickly. Today, you will find more than 40,000 people that call La Jolla home.
