1.2 Apply ice several times a day. Each time for 10 minutes. Thereafter, place a warm compress on the anal region for about another 10 to 20 minutes.

1.3 Take sitz bath. Fill your bathtub with just enough water to cover your anal region. Soak for about 15 minutes. Do this few times a day, especially after bowel movement. This will help in increasing the blood flow and it could also help in reducing the size of the swollen veins.

2. Avoid aggravating your condition

2.1 Blot the anus gently with moist toilet paper, pre-moistened towels or baby wipers. Apply cleaning agent after bowel movement.

2.2 Avoid rubbing the anal region.

2.3 Rinse off in the shower or on a bidet. After cleansing, pat the anal area gently with a soft towel or cloth.

2.4 Use soaps which contain no dye or perfume.

3. Make Yourself More Comfortable

3.1 If necessary take a day or more and rest in bed. This will help to take off the pressure of inflamed and irritated veins.

3.2 If you are pregnant lie on your side. Otherwise, sleep on your stomach with a pillow under your hips. This will help in decreasing the swelling.

3.3 Avoid standing for too long.

3.4 Avoid lifting heavy objects.

3.5 Wear cotton underwear to prevent moisture build-up.

3.6 Wear loose clothing to reduce the pressure on the anal area.

4. Maintain a healthy lifestyle

4.1 Get enough fiber through your diet. Fiber helps in making bowel movements smoother. This could prevent training which may cause hemorrhoids.

4.2 Drink adequate amount of water. This will help in making the stools softer to pass.

4.3 Reduce in salt intake. Salt could cause fluid retention and could lead to body or blood vessels to swell.

4.4 Have enough exercise.

4.5 Avoid straining on the toilet.
