subject: The Many Uses of Soothing Music [print this page]

You'd probably find it side by side rap and rock albums. From the term itself, it is easy to see what its intended basic function is. The question though is whether or not it is effective at what it's supposed to do.

You can easily see the effects of musical pieces intended to soothe if you look into the effects of songs and instrumental compositions on the human body. Studies reveal that what people listen to for prolonged periods of time can affect mood, mental states and emotions. This is evident in heart beat rates and brain waves. Hence, fast beats tend to promote energy and adrenaline while soothing music tends to support restful and relaxing inner states.

It is because the effects of musical sounds have been scientifically proven that various therapy institutions, spas and practitioners have made good use of them. Just go to any spa in town and you are more likely to hear slow beats piping through the sound system rather than fast ones. The same can be said for the background sounds in recovery rooms, clinic activity centers, treatment clinics and rehabilitation centers.

Therapy isn't the only situation you can use slow compositions for. They can also be utilized to calm people in high stress level situations. A lot of relaxing soothing music pieces are now therefore also used in medical or dental clinics, labor rooms and business offices. Naturally, you would feel more inclined to work on a time sensitive task or to get on the dentist's chair when your nerves aren't all bunched up.
