That is, the lack of long term prospects for fossil fuel availability.
These are the reasons I say that with confidence...
No more large oil fields are being discovered - The last large oil fields in the Middle East, and for that matter, around the world, were discovered back in the 1940's. Now that does not mean that there is no additional resource that large left on the planet, but it does mean that it is less likely because of the sophistication of our detection resources has gotten so much greater since those oil fields were discovered.
Since we are not finding additional oilfields that large we are having to make do with the smaller ones and even they are diminishing at a rapid pace. They are at a phase now where they're pumping massive amounts of salt water into these caverns trying to flush out the last little bit of oil. That is not a good sign, meaning the prospects for these oil wells lasting many more years are bleak. When oil wells run out of oil they do it very quickly, so it is unlikely that we will get years and years of warning that we are at the end - in contrast, we will just all of a sudden be out of oil.
China - This country is placing huge demands on world energy supplies. China's economy has a tremendous growth rate and it is being fueled by the large number of coal burning power plants that the country is building. These coal power plants are drawing down further on the oil and coal reserves that we have left. As the Chinese economy continues to grow, the resources that we have to power industrial and utility power plants will go down as well.
Other 3rd world countries are Americanizing - As all Third World countries begin to americanize, they begin to use fossil fuel at a rapid rate. This in combination with what the Chinese are doing is a tremendous strain on the oil and coal reserves of the entire world. It cannot hold up at this pace forever.
In summary, home wind turbines offer a way out of this mess that we have created for ourselves. The only clear way out of it is to take advantage of what we know now at least to be the best short term solution to the problem, which is renewable energy sources like wind power and solar power, as well as geothermal energy.
