Imagine adopting a little child from another home, driving them to a new home, and instantly expecting them to cuddle, and love you. Extremely unrealistic, your new kid will need to adjust to their new family and surroundings, and over time will grow to love and trust you. The same methods should be practiced with your new hamster. Give him or her a couple days to adjust, then slowly introduce yourself, and build trust. Read bringing your hamster home for more detailed information on necessary preparations for making your hamster feel welcome.

Once youre past the first few days of ownership, it is time to start the hamster taming process. Always keep this in mind, A tame animal is a trusting animal. Gaining their trust may take a couple weeks, but consistent interaction will yield the most expedient results.

Begin taming by allowing the hamster to sniff your hand, make certain you dont make any sudden movements that may scare them. This allows your Teddy Bear Hamster to pick up your scent, and learn that it is not a threat. Give positive reinforcement after each encounter to further ingrain your scent with a positive experience. Youll know youre making progress when your hamster allows you to pet him or her while they eat the treat you gave them.

Now, your hamster should be tame, but you still need to learn how to hold a hamster. This is one of the least understood aspects of hamster care. Think of how big you are compared to them, and how quick your movements look, and how strong you are. If you wanted to, you could crush a hamster with a touch more force than what it takes to squeeze toothpaste. On top of that, you have the power to move their home, and forcibly remove them from it with ease. Talk about intimidating! It is quite a miracle that these little guys trust us at all. With all that said, taming and holding your hamster is a process.

Start by slowly coaxing your hamster into a coffee cup with food or another incentive. Do this a few times, allowing him or her to acclimate to being touched and moved. From there, progress to picking them up with your hands by gently scooping them up on either side of their body. Now, that they are in your hands gently hold them (less grip than on your toothpaste tube) and allow your hamster to crawl from hand to hand. Make sure you always keep a hand in front of them for it to walk on.
