subject: Get Your Visitors To Vote Your Websites And Recommend Them On Social Sites [print this page]

Social bookmarking sites are fun places to visit. You see all sorts of interesting content on the site. Not only that, you also see what other members of the community like through votes.

When you visit a web page like Digg, you will notice a little squarish counter by the side of the title. That counter is really a voting counter. If you click on it, you will increase the click count by one. Usually, content with the most number of votes gets featured on the homepage. And on big sites like Digg, be prepared for a traffic avalanche if your web page gets featured!

So how does a web page get a big number of votes? Many people think that they can submit their URLs and hope that members of the community will like the content and vote the URLs. Unfortunately, that rarely happens. There are thousands of links being submitted each day. So that means it's more likely that your link will be buried among all those links. But some web pages do get hundreds of votes. How did that happen? The truth is, it didn't happen by chance. Here are some tips on how to get more votes for your own sites.

Tip 1: Create interesting content - This is a per-requisite. You need to be able to write interesting content. Usually, humorous content gets the most votes. They are get shared among members more frequently. So you need to decide on a topic that is interesting, and write in a tone that is not too formal to stand a chance.

Tip 2: Pick an attention catching headline. - A little headlines are outrageous, but they are so for one reason - to catch your attention. So if your headline doesn't stand out, you are at the losing end. Remember, there are thousands of links competing for attention. So why should yours stand out and get votes? Think hard.

Tip 3: Going back to your readership base. - If you need a strong readership base, you need a very good chance of getting votes. All you need to do is to write a blog post, broadcast it to your existing readers, and wait for them to vote. Ever visit blogs with an RSS feed counter that says something like "10000 readers"? These blogs need collected the email addresses of their readers. Whenever they write a blog post, their readers get an email automatically. They then come to site and start voting!

Tip 4: Ask for the vote! - If you want votes, simply ask for them! How many times can you ask without sounding too naggy? You never want to chase your readers away. That depends on the length of your post. We recommend asking users to vote once at the beginning of the post, and other time at the end of the post.
