subject: Deciding Between A Electric Radio Control Car And An Nitro Radio Control Cars [print this page]

You have decided you want a Radio Control Car but you don't know if you want an Electric RC Car or a Nitro RC Car.

Both types of Radio Control Cars look very similar in regards to appearance but once you get under the hood there are many things which set them apart.

First thing to state is all toy grade RC Cars are Electric powered. Electric radio control cars require rechargeable batteries to run (Nickel-Cadmium (NICD) or Nickle Hydride (NiMH)) whilst Nitro RC cars run on fuel (mixture of methanol, oil and nitro methane).

Electric RC cars run with brushed motors or brushless motors. Brushless motors are more expensive and offer more speed to the RC car (many Brushless RC cars are said to be faster than Nitro RC Cars).

In Nitro RC Cars, the higher the concentration of nitro methane; the faster and more powerful your car will be. Nitro engines have carburettors, air filters, flywheels, clutches, pistons, glow plugs, crank shafts and fuel systems.

Most nitro radio control cars have a metal chassis as this allows the Radio control car to withstand the heat that is produced from the nitro engine. Whilst all electric RC cars have a plastic chassis, these chassis are made from carbon fibre; which gives them more strength and making them light weight.

Nitro radio control cars have longer run time and can be easily refilled, unlike Electric RC cars which normally run for 10 - 15 and the batteries have to be charged for at least 45mins. Having said that fuel cost over a period of time is more expensive and they tend to be more pricey than Electric RC cars.

The biggest disadvantage of nitro radio control cars is that they require more maintenance which will again increase the running price, this is why Electric RC cars are popular amongst beginners. In addition to all the maintenance of nitro cars; nitro fuel leaves residue.

Finally one last point to make is that whilst running a nitro radio control car there will be smoke and they are noisy but Electric RC cars are quiet making them more popular to race in neighborhoods. However, who doesn't like the sound of an engine!?
