As a local business that prioritizes the community's security and safety, Green Locksmith Chula Vista is here to inform and educate the public on car theft statistics in San Diego County. While we focus on our neighbors and customers, this knowledge is important across the United States. We believe that a more informed consumer can benefit not only the consumer, but the businesses and community on a whole.

Currently, San Diego County has the fourth-highest number of vehicle thefts per capita in the U.S., according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. A more detailed look at Chula Vista shows that the number of car thefts in the city is 1.83 times the national average. In a place where crime rates (e.g., murder, aggravated assault, violent crimes, etc.) are generally at much lower levels than the national average, how can we improve the car theft situation here?

At the individual level, there are some easy behavioral suggestions we have:

Always lock your vehicle and check that all windows are closed

Never leave valuables inside the car, including laptops, small electronics, wallets, personal paperwork or any personal identification

Bring your electronics and personal items into your home or office with you whenever possible or at least lock them in the trunk or away from clear view

Use anti-theft or automatic tracking devices many locksmith Chula Vista companies carry these for purchase

Never leave your keys in your vehicle, even at a gas station

Park your vehicle in a well-lit area at night try to park your vehicle in a secure garage

Never hide a spare key in your vehicle

Remove house keys from under floor mats, sun visor, etc.

Never leave the car running when you are not in it even if you are running out for only a few seconds

You can also check with the local police and the Automobile Club of Southern California's Chula Vista (AAA) on special services they offer. For example, in February of 2010, the AAA provided free anti-theft Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etching for vehicle windows. A VIN etching on a window of a car makes that vehicle a less likely target of auto theft. While these etchings are small, they are still visible enough to deter thieves. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol Border Division, Chula Vista Police Dept. and National Insurance Crime Bureau co-hosted a public event that provided theft prevention tips to local car owners.

Locksmith companies can provide an additional level of knowledge and service for you. Green Locksmith Chula Vista and other local companies can install car alarm systems and anti-theft tracking devices for your vehicle. If you get locked out, make sure you check that your locksmith service provider is fully insured and bonded. After the technician expertly performs lock picking, you should ask for a spare key to be made. But, remember not to keep the spare key inside the vehicle! A locksmith can additionally inspect your car to test out your lock and key system. If it is an older model, an upgrade may be recommended especially if a car alarm system is not installed.

Remember, you have many resources to turn to for tips and help combating car theft. At Green Locksmith Chula Vista, we would be happy to be one of your chosen resources. Whether you have questions about your auto, home, or office, we can help guide you to the right solutions. However, staying informed and aware of your surroundings can greatly help us all decrease the incidents of car theft in Chula Vista and San Diego County.
