subject: Famous People Who Circumnavigated The World [print this page]

Circumnavigation may refer to someone using a vehicle to travel around an island, a continent or even the entire planet. In fact it has been done by 16th century sailors like Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano and all the way up to the 20th century with the use of hot air balloons trying to catch the jet stream and ride along with it, maritime vessels, airplanes, rocket ships and even sometimes on foot. The Earths circumference is approximately 24,900 miles (40,080 kilometers) and while the planet is spinning on its axis at 1,000 miles per hour, it would take 24 hours for it to complete just 1 rotation. Below are a list of famous people who were successful in cruising the circle of the Earth:

Loic Peyron he is the person who won the yacht race which was intended to circumnavigate the world by passing through the Panama Canal. He was able to do it in just 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes 53 seconds back in January 6, 2012.

Cunard Lines Cruise Ship Laconia that circumnavigated the stretch of more than 131,462,400 feet of ocean water (due to the zigzagging route). Its route covered New York City, South Hampton, the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, the Pacific Ocean, Cape Horn, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, Hong Kong and India. The Laconia held the world record back in 1922. Currently the maritime record for circumnavigating the Earth belongs to the MY Ady Gil speed boat and it covered 43,824,000 yards of ocean in just 60 days 23 hours and 49 minutes on June 27, 2008.

LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was the worlds first airship to have circumnavigated the world. Invented in Germany and circled the globe back in 1929.

Steve Fossett is the first man to cruise in a hot air balloon to catch the illusive jet stream and circumnavigate the world.

Charles Kingsford Smith is an Australian born pilot who crossed the two hemispheres of the world from meridian to meridian covering a distance at least 36,787.559 kilometers (22,858.729 miles) along the poles.

Dave Kunst was the first man to WALK around the world between June 20, 1970 and October 10, 1974, while strictly adhering to the rules of the Guinness World Records where any person attempting to set a world record must travel a minimum of 36,787.559 kilometers (the distance of the Tropic of Cancer).

Yuri Gagarin was the first man to orbit the Earth from space on the Russian spaceship Vostok 1, back in 1961.

Either by land, sea, air or in outer space many people have tried and became successful in circumnavigating the lengthy distances longitude-wise as well as latitude-wise. It is a big and risky challenge; however, if youve completed it will bring you great fame and possibly fortune. Perhaps the next thing youll need to worry about is circumnavigating the isle of fame this time around.
