subject: Daintree Faqs [print this page] Daintree is a quaint settlement on the northern side of Queensland. You will find that is a little over 50 km from Port Douglas and approximately 100 km from Cairns. The settlement was named after Richard Daintree, a geologist from Britain. The Dain tree river River meanders through the settlement and the Mcdowell Ramges Ranges are also present here.
Other than Beef farming and butter factories, one of the most popular attractions is the Daintree National Park. The park was founded in 1981, but received its world heritage status only in 1988. In the national park you will find two separate sections; one for farming and one that is covered by a rainforest. Geologists believe that the Daintree Rainforest is the one of the oldest existing rainforests in the world. The Daintree rain Rainforest goes back more than 100 million years. We can thank the continental drift phenomenon for that. You will find a lot of endangered birds and tress trees here. You will find the Wompoo Fruit Dove pigeon here. It is one of the six species of endangered pigeons that call the park their home. It also houses the Cassowary bird. The other two rivers that flow through the park are Bloomfield and Mossman.
The Mossman Gorge is popular site in the park and is located on the southern side of the Daintree National Park. There is a lot to see at the Mossman Gorge, from Boyds forest dragons to beautiful epiphytic plants. You will to see the bright blue Ulysses butterflies and other exotic birds. About 400 meters metres of walking tracks and viewing stations have been provided that offer scenic views of the river. The gorge is a part of the land that belongs to the Kuku Yalanji tribe. Cape Tribulation is another popular site here in the national park. You can plan a trip here, too, if you want to go horse riding or kayaking or even for a crocodile. Accommodation in Cape Tribulation includes eco lodges, hotels and hostels. You can visit the Great Barrier Reef from here, which is less than 20 km away.
