I find that getting a bus is one of the most stressful things i can do, with people playing loud music through their headphones or having to take the only seat by the smelly man eating his cheese and onion crisps.

But according to Doctor David Lewis, the man who coined the phrase "road rage" people find driving a far more stressful option. Dr Lewis, from the University of Sussex, conducted an experiment where he measured the heart rate of thirty commuters when driving and taking the bus. The assessment found that the stress induced was a third less when on the bus. The stress they measured for wasn't just your white knuckle, crazy mental stress, but stress that will affect the body over time.

"The study shows that driving in congested traffic now outweighs any previous benefits that driving in a private car once gave," said Dr Lewis, who first coined the phrase "road rage" in 1985 to describe explosive bursts of anger by motorists, often born out of a sense of frustration behind the wheel. In answer to the research produced, the Greener Journeys Campaign has been launched, which is designed to encourage people to get out of their cars and use the public transport on offer.

Claire Haigh, from the greener journeys campaign said "A survey found a fifth of motorists would be prepared to swap to public transport for reasons to do with the environment. Just one double-decker bus can take 75 cars off the road, reducing emission levels." If you are travelling on Britain's roads, make sure that you have valid Car Insurance.
