Backpacking to Melbourne
Backpacking to Melbourne

A new experience lay ahead of me. I'd never hitchhiked long distances before, but I at least wanted to have tried this way of travelling. So I did. I made my way from Brisbane via the coast and headed to Melbourne, and found that hitching is in fact an art of its own. There's a lot more to it than you'd think. It all starts with a nice smile just to get in and once youre in your set, as long as you are nice to the drive and they do not kick you out along the way.

The guy that I got in the car with was a Melbourne local he said he picked me up because when he was younger he used to hitchhike himself. We had a lot of fun along the way and I shouted him a few beers, it was about 11pm and we were about 2 hours from Melbourne, I was getting a bit worried because I was going to be new in this town and I had not yet arranged my accommodation. He suggested a few backpacker places that I could stay at and we agreed on one and he dropped me off. I went inside and the girl informed me that the last room had just been filled I was so tired I just wanted to go to sleep. So I used their internet cafe and started looking for last minute accommodation, as I did not want to just be walking around everywhere trying to find a room. I came across www.cheapmotelsmelbourne.com.au I rang them and negotiated a room from $130 to $100 on the basis that it was late at night.

Next morning I was having breakfast and a beautiful girl sat across from me and we started talking and she had told me that she had been hitchhiking also and was looking for a cheap place to stay in Melbourne and looking to stay for around 3 months. I had planned to stay for around 3 months also. She said that there were a lot of cheap motels in Melbourne but we could probably stay at a backpacker hostel in St Kilda which is about 15 min out of the CBD, and it would probably cost about $50 a night for the both of us. So we headed to St Kilda a booked in I cannot remember the name of it but it was on Fitzroy St, But to cut a long story short I am writing this 3 years later from my house in Melbourne, the girl who sat across from me at the backpackers is now my lovely wife and we have a 2 year old girl. There are so many stories of those who go backpacking for a few months and never come home because they fall in love and I would definitely recommend you try it, (backpacking that is).

But if you guys are coming to Melbourne to do your backpacking and looking for cheap motels or backpackers then I would recommend you try the place on Fitzroy St or the cheap motel in the city I do not remember the name of that one either but the website is www.cheapmotelsmelbourne.com.au best of luck in your travels!
