Information about different string instruments
VIOLIN STRINGS
Violin strings are four open types of strings tuned in perfect fifth. The open violin string implies that when a string is played there should be no resistance from any other finger. So they vibrate more freely. Violin string earlier used to be made of sheep intestine also called catgut. However it has now been replaced by synthetic materials like metals (mostly aluminium and steel) the stranded synthetic core (metallic) is wound with various metals like aluminium or steel. The four strings of violin correspond to G, D, A and E in that order.
CELLO STRINGS
Another member of the violin family of stringed instruments is the cello which is a bowed stringed instrument. Cello string is quiet thin and when played not much air is disturbed hence weak sound is produced. The vibrating string is mounted on a larger body to transmit vibration to increase the volume of sound. Like their violin counter-parts, cello strings were earlier made of catgut to be replaced by synthetic materials like perlon (kind of nylon) and metals like aluminium, titanium and chromium. The pitches of cello string correspond to C-G-D-A.
ELECTRIC CELLO
To keep up with modern trends, the classical cello has given rise to the modern electric cello. The electric cello is based on sound produced by electronic amplification in contrast to the acoustic resonance relied upon by the classical cello. The shape and size can be similar or modified from the acoustic version. Most electric cellos have elongated pin, to allow for the standing position different from the sitting position in traditional cello. Electric cello is also available in five and six string models to provide versatility.
VIOLA STRINGS
Somewhere between the violin and the cello, lies the viola which is a bowed stringed instrument. Viola strings are individually wrapped around a peg near the scroll and is tuned by turning the peg. It commonly has 4 strings normally tuned in fifth. Tuning the viola string to C-G-D A produces music in classical form.
DOUBLE BASS STRINGS
Double bass is the modern variety of traditional stringed instruments. Its the largest and lowest pitched bowed string instrument in modern symphony orchestra. The strings are over-wound catgut strings which are now replaced by synthetic materials like steel. Double bass strings are tuned to E-A-D-G generally tuned in fourth.
ELECTRIC VIOLIN
Electric violin is the modern variety of the classical violin. The music is produced in form of electronic output in contrast to 4 stringed traditional violin the availability of 5,6 and7 stringed electric violin provide versatility. The electronic violin produces a raw sound as there is no resonance as in the hollow bodied classical versions and so are preferred in rock and pop music.
All of the above instruments make a magical sound with the help of a string and take you in a mesmerizing world.
