subject: What To Know About Super Yachts [print this page]

Super yachts or 'luxury' yachts are privately owned sea vessels with their own professional crew and a variety of amenities such as internet access, television, restaurant dining and even jacuzzis. Between 1997 and 2008 there was an impressive increase in interest and sales as the boats become popular. Some are owned solely by private professionals, often entrepreneurs, business experts and royalty, and some are available to be rented.

A relatively new concept, the term luxury yacht developed at the start of the twentieth century, following a trend of rich clients commissioning their own vessels. Due to the social status of the people who were purchasing these large boats, the press immediately gave them the exposure and featured the boats in many exclusive magazines. The first event was held at the New York Yacht Club in Rhode Island.

The only true home for these boats is the one of the ports from the country their flag comes from. The paths they take vary, but in general many are seen in the Mediterranean during the summer months and stick to the Caribbean in the winter. This is known amongst the owners as the 'Milk Run'.

With regards to crew, the amount of members can vary from anything up to around seventy people for the largest vessels. They generally include a captain, first mate, engineers, chef and stewards or stewardesses. Many of them stay on board all year round, living in the cabins without having to pay for amenities. There are no set hours and staff often spend their time preparing the boat for the guests when in a port.

There is a standard set up including, most popularly - a speed boat, banana boat or additional smaller vessel. They normally carry several tenders to enable people to get to shore. There are also several decks, with the sun deck on top. There is usually a private bar and a dining room which is hosted by the chef and waiters.

With crew who maintain the boat, cook and sail for you, and being spoiled for choice when it comes to activities and luxury equipment, super yachts are aptly named. However this is a luxury reserved in price for the few who can afford to buy it outright or even charter it for a week. Research into the costs involved indicate that the cheapest weekly rental is twenty thousand dollars. You can find more information online or in your area.
