subject: Iran Is Capable Of Conducting Strikes Worldwide [print this page] Iran says that it is capable of conducting worldwide strikes on US interests if they are attacked. The reason that the US would have to attack Iran would be to take out its nuclear capabilities. The Iranians are bent on developing nuclear weapons regardless of the sanctions that the world community has imposed on them. There have been different estimates of their progress with little agreement on how long that it will take them to reach their goal, but by all estimates they will reach their goal sooner or later.
The United States has also tried to force Tehran to scrap sensitive nuclear work by imposing new tougher sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and giving U.S. banks new powers to freeze Iranian government assets.
Iran's ambassador to Moscow said that the United States would be making a serious mistake, akin to suicide, if it risked a military strike on them. Unfortunately the military strike might become necessary if the diplomacy that the world community is using doesnt work. The situation at this time looks like the diplomacy wont work.
Washington has not publicly announced any plans to attack Iran but will not rule out the possibility of a preemptive military strike.
The Iranians have also announced that it has a wide array of plans for counter strikes against the US if necessary. Whether this is true or not I dont know but I am sure that there are some elements of truth there. There is no doubt that they probably have contingency plans in place but the argument is will they be able to execute them? The US has been diligent to keep the pressure on al Qaeda which has kept them under control so far but there is no insurance that we can continue to prevent a calamity in the future at the hands of al Qaeda which leaves an even bigger question mark about the Iranians..
The US has been concerned about the availability of nuclear materials on the black market and the possibility that terrorists could obtain fissionable material and use it to produce a crude weapon. Washington has started an initiative which is designed to help to account for all nuclear materials worldwide but such a plan is probably too ambitious to be successful.
I have to believe that US intelligence is putting a squeeze on the terrorist factions when I look at the fact that they havent been able to mount a serious attack since the bombing of the World Trade Centers in Ney York. The efforts at mounting subsequent attacks on the United States since then have been weak and ill conceived. Terrorist have attempted individual actions which would have been small if they had been successful but they have all failed.
There have been cases where American citizens have been incited to the point of committing atrocities but there has not been a case where terrorists have been able to infiltrate our borders again and kill people with massive bombings or other type attacks.
The question becomes a question of whether the US can keep the Iranians back on their heels the way that they have been able to keep al Qaeda off balance. They have utilized drones and Special Operations troops to take out many of the organizations leaders.
I do not think that it would be possible to keep the same type of military pressure on the Iranians that they have been able to keep on the terror organization because of many factors not withstanding the size and scope of any type operation. Military Ring Express
