subject: Tips To Remove Slats From Venetian Blinds [print this page]

Venetian blinds are one of the hottest selling window decoration options in the last couple of years. These are known for their practicality and style. As the name suggests these blinds evolved from the artistically superior city of Venice in Italy, from their very initial days they were seen as key home decoration items by Europeans. But over the years their designs have undergone significant changes, only for the good. Modern designs of venetian blinds are perfect for the present day homes. There are designer collections of blinds that are sure to leave the onlookers awestruck. Slats play an important role in the practicality of venetian blinds. Slats are easily adjustable and they provide the homeowners with independence. As a homeowner you can open and close the slats as per your needs of light and heat. The slats can be kept wide open during winter months to stream in lots of light and heat, while summer months call for closed slats. Degrees of opening for the slats decide how cool or hot a room is.

Venetian blinds can last a long time if they are maintained effectively. You can clean them with mild dusting every day. But on weekends you should try and pay extra attention to the blinds. Some manufacturers advise on opening the entire set of slats and cleaning the minute corners effectively. So below are some steps to remove the venetian blinds:

There is a wide base made of plastic at the bottom row of venetian blinds. You can open the caps off with the sharp tip of any screw driver or knife. This will allow access to the chords which are responsible for holding the slats in place.

Slowly untie the chords and remove excess of slats from beneath. There are two chords with each slat that have a loop at both ends. You should pull the loosened chord and free the slats out from each end.

Once you have successfully shortened the chords to their appropriate length try to cut off the excess cords from the bottom.

Lastly, install these bottom slats again. Retie the chords and reinsert them in the bottom slats. Go ahead and re-install the metal/plastic caps.

There are some more things you should keep in mind while removing the slats from venetian blinds such as:

You should hold the blinds in place when you look to shorten them. If this is not done then chords may get loose and tangle up.

After the blinds are uninstalled you should use a flat surface such as table or floor to further work on them.

If there are snap brackets used to hang the venetian blinds then there will be a metal teeth holding the blinds tightly against the wall. In such situations grab both ends of the blinds and turn them up to release the metal holder.

If you can open the slats of venetian blinds using the above mentioned process you efforts will be reduced. There will be minimum chances of any damage to the blinds too.
