subject: Werkmaster Colossos Machine Of Choice To Grind And Polish Comedy Carpet Blackpool England [print this page] North Vancouver, BC Canada The Comedy Carpet with over 160,000 individually cut granite letters embedded in concrete covers a staggering 2,200 square metres in front of the Blackpool Tower on the Tower Festival Headland in Blackpool, England.
When Gordon Young the artist and creator was commissioned by Blackpool Council to design and implement this huge undertaking, their machine of choice to tackle this difficult project was the WerkMaster COLOSSOS.
Finding a machine that could grind and polish both granite and concrete simultaneously, while removing lippage and maintaining an extremely flat floor, was a challenge. While many contractors and equipment manufacturers were invited to quote on the project, most declined because of the difficulty and enormity of the task and their equipments inability to maintain a flat floor.
Introduced to Gordon and his team by Tim Devenish of GraftMaster in Lancaster, the COLOSSOS rose to the challenge. Originally designed to polish Absolute Black Granite, WerkMasters patented Octi-Disc Technology combined with its Ultra Flex Plug N Go tooling system proved to be the perfect solution for the project.
It is one of Britain's largest pieces of public art, cost 2.6m, and celebrates the contribution to comedy featuring the work of over 850 of Britains best comedians and writers of British comedy. Brian Wilson, President of WerkMaster stated, It is very encouraging to see that a project of this expense and magnitude and with so much public visibility and historical value would place its confidence in WerkMaster.
