subject: Is Iran In Cahoots With Al Qaeda? [print this page] We believe that Iran is assisting the Taliban in their efforts in the War on Terror against the United States. There has been evidence uncovered over the term of the war that seems to show that the Iranians are complicit in many of the actions of al Qaeda and have even supplied them with some weapons to be used against US and NATO troops. Sky news has disclosed that Iran has been supplying al Qaeda with the use of advanced explosives, funding, and a safe haven as part of a deal first worked out in 2009.
Both are looking to retaliate against the US in some form for the death of Osama bin Laden. They have not been able to do so yet and I believe that the reason is the intelligence that the US has been able to gather to thwart planned or perceived attacks of troops or innocent citizens.
The website reported that top al Qaida leader Ayman al Zawahiri is now believed to be planning an attack simultaneously on multiple locations.
One source told Sky News: We do know that an operation is underway. We assess that the most likely target is to be European. And the most obvious target in Europe for an attack that would attract a lot of attention would be the Olympic Games.
A secret intelligence memo seen by Sky News noted: Against the background of intensive cooperation over recent months between Iran and al-Qaida, with a view to conducting a joint attack against Western targets overseas, Iran has significantly stepped up its investment, maintenance and improvement of operational and intelligence ties with the al-Qaida leadership in Pakistan in recent months.
Another major factor in the actions that the Iranians are taking is the threat of a US or Israeli led strike against their nuclear facilities. It appears that a strike may be imminent because the Iranians insist on continuing the development of their nuclear facilities. I believe that the Iranians are unsure of being able to stop any such attack should it occur and they need to be able to exact some type of vengeance against any attackers. They have refused to cease their efforts to acquire nuclear weapons and the position of both the US and Israel is that they cant be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
Israel fears that it will be the first target of an Iranian nuclear attack if they are allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US fears that some of its installations which are located in range will be attacked also.
They may attempt to conduct some type of preemptive strike on the US or Israeli targets which I doubt the Iranians will do directly, but I have no doubt that al Qaeda would do so. The death of Osama bin Laden was an embarrassment that they will have a hard time living down for quite a while to come.
I believe that they only reason that they have not been able to retaliate of mount a significant attack for quite a long period of time is because US tactics and use of gathered intelligence has kept them on their heels. There is no doubt in my mind that they would have done so a long time ago but their avenues have been effectively blocked. The US and its allies have been extremely successful in keeping the terrorist organization in check and keeping it off balance.
